1.) When you add two integers, how can you decide whether their sum will be positive, negative, or zero?

If you add two integers and the sum is positive, then the two integers are positive, or one negative integer having a smaller absolute value than the other positive integer, or if a positive integer and zero are added together. If the sum is zero, two opposites were added. And if the sum is negative, then two negative integers have been added.

2.) Describe how to add any two integers.

An easy way to add integers is, (we learnt this technique in this unit) to use chips and a chip board, 1 red chips would represent -1, and 1black chip would represent +1, you place each integer on either side of the chip board, so if the sum is -5+3, then 5 red chips on one side, and 3 black chips on the other side, now line the red and black chips beside each other, take away a pair of the two colors (one black and one red), if you do this 2 red chips will be left, so the answer to this problem is -2.

3.) Explain how you can find the opposite of a number. Use the following examples to illustrate your explanation.

a. 7 b. 0 c. -12

To find the opposite of any integer, just find the opposite integer on the other side of zero.

a. -7 b. 0 (doesn’t change) c. 12

Summary:

In this investigation, we learnt a new way for adding integers, using a chip board, and using the number line, most of this investigation was about adding Integers.
